The Language
11hAccounting, the three statements, and the Excel grammar everything else is written in
Finance has one alphabet: the financial statements. Every valuation, every ratio, every deal model is a rearrangement of these three tables. You cannot skip this and you will never need to relearn it.
Reading a Company
11hTurning three statements into a judgement: profitability, efficiency, solvency, and the quality of what is reported
Anyone can read a balance sheet. Being able to say, in four sentences, what kind of business this is, how it makes money, what could kill it and whether the numbers are honest, is what an analyst is paid for. This level is that skill.
Intrinsic Valuation
15hTime value, risk, the cost of capital, free cash flow, growth, terminal value, and the DCF built end to end
This is the centre of the discipline and the centre of your degree. Every other technique is either an input to this or a shortcut around it. Your quant background means the mathematics is easy; the discipline is in the definitions and in refusing to fudge the inputs.
Relative Valuation
9hMultiples, the enterprise-to-equity bridge, comps, precedent transactions, and the difference between value and price
Ninety percent of real-world valuation conversations happen in multiples, not DCFs. This level is where you become fluent in the language the market actually speaks, and where the single most-tested interview concept lives: enterprise value versus equity value.
Capital and Deals
13hInvestment decisions, capital structure, payout, M&A and the LBO
Level 2 valued the business. This level is about the decisions that change it: what to invest in, how to fund it, what to return, and what happens when one company buys another. It is the content of investment banking and private equity interviews.
Markets
14hMarket structure, portfolio theory, factor models, fixed income and derivatives
This level maps directly onto three of emlyon's first-year courses (Introduction to portfolio management, Financial mathematics & fixed income, Options and other derivatives) and onto CFA Level I. It is also where your mathematics gives you the biggest advantage of the whole curriculum: the hard part here is vocabulary and convention, not the maths.
The Edge
20hPrivate equity, venture, advanced modelling, capital allocation, distress, ethics, the interview, and the capstone
The first six levels make you competent. This one makes you employable and keeps running through the year at emlyon: it covers the three specialisation tracks, the AMF and CFA ground, the modelling craft, and the two artefacts that actually get you hired, a full model and an investment memo you can defend.
